The edX TOEFL test preparation course is completely free! If you’re trying to take the TOEFL test on a tight budget, edX is a great option.

You will be allowed limited access to the course materials, including student support, with the option to upgrade to a premium package if you want graded exams and certificates upon completion.

✅ Study plan

If you require step-by-step guidance, edX TOEFL prep online can provide it. Although edX is absolutely free, it includes a study plan to keep you on track while you get ready to sit for the TOEFL exam.

What you might not like about edX TOEFL 👎

That said, like any other free test-prep course, edX suffers from a lack of enough support, and that means limited study materials, among other features. Here’s a look:

❌ Not a personalized curriculum

edX TOEFL is one of those one-size-fits-all prep programs. No diagnostic tests. No personalized study plans. No ask-an-instructor questions. And definitely no individualized feedback. Most TOEFL courses provide these features allowing learners to customize their prep and spend time studying what will lead to max score improvement.

However, these other courses cost somewhere between $60 and $350. But still, it’s better to pay a little something and get an individualized course that’s sure to get you the score you need.

For example, diagnostic exams help figure out one’s strengths and weaknesses and are from there, and a training package can be created for the individual to turn those weaknesses into strengths.

This also enables the companies to offer score improvement guarantees on their courses, something edX doesn’t.

 ❌ No guarantees

Both edX TOEFL free and edX TOEFL premium do not offer score improvement or satisfaction guarantees. TOEFL courses from Magoosh, PrepScholar, BestMyTest, and many others have these guarantees in place. Companies use these score guarantees to increase student’s confidence in their curriculums.

For example, Magoosh promises that you will see a 4+ points improvement after completing their TOEFL course or get your money back otherwise. BestMyTest has a 7+ points improvement guarantee on its one-year course and a 15+ points guarantee on its lifetime package.  PrepScholar too has a 15+ points improvement guarantee or get your money back.

Therefore, if you are looking for a sure thing, edX TOEFL might not be it; try Magoosh, PrepScholar, Kaplan, or BestMyTest.

❌ Only 6 weeks of access

TOEFL test preparation might take a lot of time, but edX TOEFL allows six weeks of access only. For some students, that might not be enough time to get acquainted with the TOEFL curriculum. If you don’t have the exam scheduled in a month and a half, this course is not for you.

If you want longer access, try the courses from BestMyTest, PrepScholar, and Kaplan, these have 6-12 months and even lifetime study packages; however, be prepared to pay a few hundred dollars.

❌ Limited features & materials

The features and resources provided in the edX TOEFL course are limited. If you use this course to prepare for a review, you may need to look for other study resources, including vocabulary materials.

Who should use the course ?

This is an excellent course for people who are just starting the TOEFL test and do not have much cash to spend on TOEFL preparation. Despite being free, edX has decent TOEFL prep resources to give you an insider’s guide to the TOEFL course

edX vs. TestDen TOEFL Prep

Both edX AND TestDEN are popular with TOEFL students. They are two district test prep companies. TestDen is a test prep company that has been offering courses since 1997, with the primary purpose of assisting learners in crushing English language certification exams.

On the contrary, edX is a much younger startup that offers thousands of online training modules for various standardized tests.

Course plans and price

TestDen’s TOEFL prep bundle is a six-month course that costs $64 and provides graded speaking and writing exams. EdX’s TOEFL course, on the other hand, is completely free, but access is limited to six weeks with the option to upgrade to a premium package for unlimited access and more study resources.

TestDen gives you a significantly more opportunity to assess yourself and improve the sections you are not fine with. You will get approximately four times the number of exams edX provides.

Plus, you have up to a month to ask for your money back if You buy the TestDen TOEFL prep course but discover it is not worth the money. On the other hand, edX has fewer online study resources, and the platform is not very user-friendly.

Although edX is absolutely free, you’ll only get limited access to the study materials which are not as in-depth as the ones provided by TestDEN. The TestDEN TOEFL option is more suitable for learners looking for a better TOEFL iBT.

However, that doesn’t mean edX TOEFL is totally useless. Here’s a look at who might benefit from the course:

Who is edX TOEFL suitable for?

If you only have 3 to 6 months to train for TOEFL and want access to a big question-answer bank, TestDen is a fantastic alternative. It costs only $64, making it fall in the cheaper course band.

Wrap Up 🎁

Not everyone has a budget to finance their TOEFL prep. non-profit organizations like edX make it easy for learners without cash to access study resources and unlock their potential.

The TOEFL course offered by the organization is designed by the people who set and administer the real exam. It teaches the How-to of the TOEFL exam, including improving your English skills, navigating the exam, managing your time during the exam, and much more.

However, it has fewer resources and allows six weeks of access only; but there’s an option to upgrade to unlimited access by making a one-time payment of $49. If you are interested in edX TOEFL, check their website for details on how to sign up.
